Description
Meibomian Gland Forceps are a specialised ophthalmic instrument used to express blocked meibomian glands, which are responsible for producing the oily layer of the tear film. These glands, located along the eyelid margins, can often become clogged in dry eye disease, leading to Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), dry eye disease, or blepharitis.
Uses of Meibomian Gland Forceps:
- Expression of Meibomian Glands – The forceps apply controlled pressure to the glands within the eyelids to express thickened or stagnant meibum, helping to restore normal gland function.
- Treatment for MGD – Used by eye care professionals to relieve symptoms of Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, which can cause dry, irritated, and inflamed eyes.
- Chalazion Management – Assists in clearing blockages that could lead to the formation of a chalazion (a non-infectious eyelid lump caused by gland obstruction).
- Post-Surgical Care – Used after certain eyelid procedures to maintain gland patency and prevent further blockages.
- Enhanced Tear Film Stability – Helps in improving the quality of the tear film by helping the Meibomian glands function.
Design & Function:
- They resemble tweezers or forceps with flat, broad ends designed to apply uniform pressure on the eyelid without causing excessive discomfort.
- They are often used after light therapy treatments such as intense pulsed light (IPL) and low level light therapy (Photobiomodulation) warm compresses or lid hygiene treatments to soften gland secretions before expression.
